Proclamation congratulating the Buhl Planetarium upon the occasion of its 75th anniversary.

WHEREAS, the Buhl Planetarium and Institute of Popular Science first opened its doors in October of 1939 in the Allegheny Center area of Pittsburgh's North Side, thanks to funding from The Buhl Foundation, established by philanthropist Henry Buhl, Jr.; and
 
WHEREAS, the original planetarium was the fifth major planetarium in the United States, joining those in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia; and
 
WHEREAS, in October of 1991, the planetarium became part of the current Carnegie Science Center complex along Pittsburgh's North Shore and was named The Henry Buhl, Jr. Planetarium & Observatory; and
 
WHEREAS, the Carnegie Science Center has established itself internationally as a leading creator of quality planetarium programs with innovative content;
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, does hereby congratulate the Buhl Planetarium on the occasion of its 75th Anniversary, and we thank the planetarium staff and volunteers for making the Buhl Planetarium a model for planetariums around the world.
